[Author's Note Previous reviews have pointed out problems with the text. This 2015 edition corrects those.] In this tale of adventure, intrigue, danger, betrayal, and evil, Biblical archeologist Dr. Stephen Saint Gabriel and his team discover a first century codex hidden in an earthenware jar. As he begins to decipher the ancient writing, he comes face to face with the journal kept by Mary Magdalene as she followed Jesus during his ministry. As Gabriel and his team take high resolution photographs of the codex pages for study, the codex is stolen, but by whom? Is it forces within the Israeli government? Perhaps members of his own team? Or, is it a sinister group within the Catholic Church--The Dark Brothers--who seek to suppress the discovery and keep Mary’s revelations from the world?
Gabriel is joined by Nicki Taylor, a beautiful and wealthy volunteer on the dig, as they attempt to protect the photographic images and make Mary’s words available to the world. And in the process they make another discovery that could shatter two millennia of teaching by Christians around the world--a discovery which they must protect with their lives.

As I read some of the negative reviews I can't help but wonder what some people were expecting. Sure, there were typos and grammatical mistakes. (Which made the dedication to an English teacher a bit oxymoronic.) I also found myself sighing every now and then when an adjective was used instead of an adverb or subject / verb didn't agree... But compared to some of the $1, $2, or even $5 Kindle books around? This one is LIGHT YEARS ahead of them! And remember one thing...It's a 99 cent book folks! Overall, I got a fairly enjoyable story without having to pay a major publisher level price. I think instead of bashing independent authors like this we should be encouraging them while sharing constructive criticism. If you hate being charged $12 or more for what amounts to a file download, then remember that you're getting a bargain here. Mr Harber, I liked the story: You could use some editing assistance but I'll be purchasing your follow up novels...

Saint Gabriel Gospel A Stephen Saint Gabriel Adventure Book 1 edition by Jerry Harber Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
My first taste of Jerry Harber's work that had me downloading the sequel as soon as I was done.
Harber brings us another of the "Jesus and me" storylines, and has tastefully suggested an outcome that most Christians could actually accept and believe.
I enjoyed the storyline. At times I wondered about the amount of stuff happening to, and around, the main characters but it is plausible. That said, if every dig is that intriguing, I'm glad I'm a priest and not an archeologist.
The only "continuity flub" I caught in this well written novel involved a character checking into a hotel his friends have already checked him into. Aside from that minor glitch, it was a smooth read. On to book two of this arc.
I applaud this author using taste, subtlety, good use of language, historical facts t blended with creative invention to weave a m o st engaging tale. All the interstitial.g elements of real human behaviors, responses, failings and "better nature" kept my interest to the last word. It was refreshing to read a book which "resolved" Th I s fact makes me look forward with enthusiasm a small to reading more of his work.. It will be fun to see what other adventures Gabe and Nicky experience.
I am worn out with some other authors writing books which are nothing more than a glorified comic books with breathtaking cliffhanger at the end and absolutely no closure. Thanks to THIS author who understands the value of completion of one story line.
Call me old-fashioned, shame me, lambast me, but I don't need cursing to make a book enjoyable - especially in one that is supposed to be religion-oriented. And then comes the obligatory attack on Catholicism. Good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people, the nature of life and free will. Some things don't seem to have been fully explained, almost as if the reader was supposed to know about the earlier lives of the characters. I gave it three stars because the plot (or story idea) was a fairly good idea with some interesting points.
I read all three of Harber's Gabriel books in succession. Books 2 and 3 are more complex and not quite as predictable as Book 1, Saint Gabriel's Gospel. However, the storyline is somewhat unique and entertaining, particularly the involved of the Dark Brothers. This is the first book of this genre (archaelogical mystery) that I have come across the Dark Brothers which added a level of suspense different from other novels. The wealthy benefactor of Nicki Taylor is convenient for the story line but the fact that she is directly involved in the story lends some credibility to her character. Although the author notes that there will be only three Gabriel books, the ending of Book 3 suggests there will be more. If there are more books, I will read them.
Note There are still issues with the proofreading of these books, i.e., left out words in particular, but I have found that to be the case in many books.
I love books on Biblical Archeology, but it's so hard to find ones that aren't just more regurgitated subject matter of Templers, Dan Brown, or whoever is the best sellers flavor of the week. So I really enjoyed this one, and the different voices of the characters. Also, in reading Jerry's after comments about returning people's money over grammar mistakes! Get a life! Grammar Nazis, I once got a new best seller from my local library and one of you kind souls took it upon themselves to red pen all the grammatical errors and correct them, plus scratched through the words they considered profane. So a newly purchased book, that County tax dollars paid for was defamed and nearly unreadable. REALLY?!? Don't you have more exciting things to be anal about or are the OCD meds not working. You read the book, let the man have his little bit of cash.
I really enjoyed this book. Not only was it exciting, it was very educational, especially in the descriptions of proper archaeological procedures, but also in citing details about the Bible and other religious writings and beliefs. It also made me think, and I always appreciate that in a book.
Yes, there were some grammatical errors, but they in no way detracted from the story. I am so grateful for the many books out there that don't cost a small fortune to read that, when a really good one comes along, I am not bothered by the "small stuff" - at least it seems small to me. And this book is a really good one!!
There are many twists and turns in the story, so I won't get into a detailed synopsis, but it never left me hanging or confused as to what was happening. I liked it so much that I immediately bought the second book in the series, finished it, and am now about to start on the third! I decided to come up for air and write this review, so I could pass on my recommendation of this book. Give it a try. I think you will really enjoy it. Oh yes, and the second one was very good also, with even more suspence!!
As I read some of the negative reviews I can't help but wonder what some people were expecting. Sure, there were typos and grammatical mistakes.
